She fell in with a man known as John “Calico Jack” Rackham (great name!) who was a known pirate and had a sloop.
The new couple left on the sloop and Anne Bonny became a full blown pirate (probably not a wench though as she seemed to be pretty strong willed).
Anne lived as a man when on board the ship. She dressed in men’s clothing and did the same sort of work as the other men. Only Rackham, who was captain, and another female pirate, knew her real identity.
Rackham’s band of merry men performed various acts of piracy, mainly on unsuspecting Spanish galleons, transporting gold and other precious items back to Spain form the colonies. It is related that Anne handled herself with gusto during their missions. However the ship was trapped by the Royal Navy, who fought and captured Rackham and his crew.
Rackham and many of the other pirates were hanged but Anne Bonny pleaded her belly. She said that she was pregnant which effectively commuted her sentence to life in prison. After that, her story runs dry. What became of her remains a mystery, some say she died in prison, others say she returned to the bosom of her family in South Carolina. Whatever the truth, her story might serve as inspiration for your next pirate wench costume party.
