Quilting is a Craft for all Levels of Experience
Quilting is sewing two or more layers of material together to make a thicker material often for warmth. Quilting is done on bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Dense quilting is where you make one area stand out over the others with added fabric or batting. Quilting can be done with a specilist long arm quilting system or by hand. The padded quilted fabric was used for its warmth and or for its protection. Ancient Eqyptian sculptures are seen with clothing which appears to have been quilted; probably for added warmth.
A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting. Quilting is usually done with three layers, the quilt top, batting and backing material. “Paper” quilting was used during American pioneer days. Machine quilting and hand quilting are the two most widely used methods. Hand Quilting is the process of using a needle and thread to sew a running stitch by hand across the entire area to be quilted. A quilting frame or hoop is used to assist the quilter in holding the piece together. Hand quilting is enjoying a resurgence today and especially well done by the Amish. With the home sewing machine the layers are often tacked together before quilting. Quilters may use multicolored or metallic threads to add to the richness of the quilting design.
Sewing the three quilt layers together, using stitches in decorative patterns, called motifs, or in utilitarian patterns, such as straight lines, using bigger stitches. Quilting is stitching through all three layers of the quilt sandwich, typically by hand which serves three purposes: 1) to secure all three layers to each other, and 2) to add to the beauty and design of the finished quilt, and 3) to trap air within the quilted sections, making the quilt as a whole much warmer than its parts. Most quilters will start in the middle of the quilt and work outward. Quilting has grown into an art form using decorative stitches. Quilting is often combined with embroidery, patchwork, applique and other forms of needlework.
Quilting is a 6 step process; 1 – select the pattern and fabric; 2 – measure and cut the fabric to make the blocks for the pattern; 3 – sew the pieces together either by hand or machine; 4 – layer the top of the quilt with the batting and the back; 5 – quilt through all layers of the quilt either by hand or machine; 6 – square up the edges and add the binding around the quilt.
