Chinese Age Charts, One Of Many Old Wives Tales Of Gender Prediction
One of the favorite things for a newly pregnant woman to do is use the Chinese age chart to predict the baby’s gender. This and other old wives tales remain active even today in the 21st century. Many of the old wives tales defy reasoning, yet freshman pregnant will suspend all rational thought to find out the big mystery question called boy? or girl?
The people of china are said to have created a chart that blends the age of the mother at conception with the month conception took place to find out the gender of a baby. If the ring swings back and forth in a line, it says a girl. An alternate version of this is swinging a new, sharpened pencil attached to a sewing needle over the mom’s non-dominate hand. The flavor of cravings is said to also be a predictor of the baby’s gender. A mother who craves sweets is supposed to be carrying a female. Salty, sour and spicy food cravings indicate males. Not much is said about bitter cravings. That one is probably indicative of girls too.
Apparently, the heart rate of the fetus is also a determiner of gender. A faster heartbeat predicts a female and slower heart rate is a tell for a male. This old wives tale had to have been born in the 20th Century, hence the use of modern medical techniques such as fetal heart rate monitors and sonograms.
Does the baby sit high or low on the mom’s belly? This is known to tell the gender of the child. A baby who is carried low is said to be a male, while a high baby is a female.
Of the more than 50 old wives tales regarding pregnancy, a number of them pertain to determining gender. The Chinese age chart is based on the Chinese lunar calendar whereas the swinging objects method is rooted in gravitational pull. They are harmless and fun unless taken too seriously. As long as there is someone rational to remind the mom-to-be that these methods are not scientifically-based and the only reliable practice for determining gender is looking at the baby’s privates at birth.
