In June 5, 1599 from a family of middle class in the town of Seville, Diego Velasquez was born and is the eldest of six children. He presented some skill in art and at the age of eleven, he was given an apprenticeship in the workroom of the great Francisco Pacheco who trained him and helped him hone his skills as a painter. He chose as his wife Pacheco’s daughter and continued his paintings that have been his primary living; his themes are mostly religious and still life paintings of tavern pieces and he was able to sell his paintings and earned a lot of money which he used to buy a comfortable house for them and another house to be rented out.
He became one of the Spain’s most respected painter as his works continued to impress a lot of people; the commoners as well as the Royal Family and people belonging to the upper class society. When he met Marques de Spinola, Velasquez painted a masterpiece called Surrender of Breda which tells the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the piece, he was stricken with awe and amazement and cannot contemplate how brilliant was Velasquez’ skill to express and capture emotions through the realism of his portraits. However, Diego will continue to paint and he would create a masterpiece that would be more famous and more brilliant than the Surrender of Breda, he will be widely known for his piece called Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; The painting is said to be the most viewed piece in the world and until now most people visit Spain just to see this wonderful work of art.
Diego Velasquez is truly a great painter, his paintings up to this generation are being studied and analyzed; he is really one of Spain’s great masters of painting.
