There are a number of Spanish painters, who have left a mark in the world of art and during Spain’s El Siglo de Oro, or Golden Age, a lot of Spain’s most brilliant painters emerged. One such popular artist which the world acknowledged as a master in this area of art is Diego Velasquez. This painter is truly one of a kind in terms of form and artwork; he is a realist painter and his vision in his art is something that was not yet common during his time.
Being the eldest of six children, Diego Velasquez was brough up in a family of minor nobility in June 5, 1599. At the age of eleven he began studying painting under the tutelage of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen years old, the painter’s guild certified Velasquez as a master painter that enabled him to work as a professional painter. He earned money by doing a number of paintings and got married to Pacheco’s daughter; at that time most of his themes were religious and tavern pieces, and because he truly is a talented painter he was able to sell his paintings and saved enough money to buy a comfortable house for them and another house to be rent out.
Diego Velasquez’s career was defined by numerous masterpiece of exceptional artworks in the realistic style which earned him a lot of attention; something that not a lot of painters enjoyed during his time. One of his many popular paintings was The Surrender of Breda which he created after he had the pleasure of meeting the Marques de Spinola; needless to say, Spinola was amazed at the amount of details and the way that Velasquez was able to capture the expressions of emotion of the subjects in the painting. However, The Surrender of Breda, as good as it is, will not be Velasquez’ greatest masterpiece that has been talked, discussed and put into knowledge in any era; Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour is the masterpiece that is regarded as the most viewed painting in the world and because of its fame, even people who does not know much about painting knows Diego Velasquez and his Las Meninas.
