Cuttlebug Die-Cutter versus the Cricut?
I am trying to find out what exactly the difference is between the Cuttlebug Die-Cutter and the Cricut Machine. It sounds like both can be used for cards and scrapbooks but it seems that there maybe more that can be done with the Cricut and I am unable to find much that does a comparison to help me decided which one to purchase. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
They both make die cut shapes, but the process is totally different. I don’t have a Cuttlebug but I have a couple different Sizzix machines and a Cricut. I have a QuikCutz too, but it’s way to hard for me to use.
The Cricut works like a computer. You plug it in, insert your choice of cartridge, and you can choose various sizes of the same. You select the size, how many you want, and the pressure for the blade, and push a button and there you go. The hardest part is that the mat you put the paper on has to be pretty sticky. They’re about $10 for the 12X12 size mat, and they’re only good for about 30 cuts. That might sound like a lot, but it isn’t. I have a hard time making really small things come out of the paper once they’re cut, and I have found that it doesn’t like all kinds of paper. I mostly use Stampin Up cardstock but when I use other brands, sometimes the blade catches and screws the whole thing up. The cartridges range in price from about $50 to about $90, but I get mine from an online scrapbook store in the Chicago area called Custom Crops and they frequently have them on sale. Michael’s has cartridges on sale this week, but it’s only Sunday and they hardly had any selection…nothing I wanted. I seldom use it because I don’t have a place to leave it set up all the time. I use my dining room for my scrapbooking and cardmaking, but I have to have my keyboard sitting on the only end of the table that’s near an outlet. I need that all the time, so using the Cricut is a bit of an ordeal. I have a friend who uses hers all the time. She even made appliques for baby clothes on it.
The Cuttlebug is like the Sizzix. You have a little die you run through the machine. Depending on which one you have you may slide it into and pull a lever or crank it through like a pasta machine. The dies have teeny little blades in them that cut the shape, but it only cuts one size. You need two circle dies to be able to mat something, whereas on the Cricut you just cut the second one a little bigger. I like to mount everything, and as a result, I have tons of different sized punches taking up a huge amount of space. I love the Sizzix because it’s manual and it can be where ever I want it to be on the table, but you have to have room to store the dies. The Cricut has a little box, smaller than an old VCR box, and the overlay for the keyboard, a book to show you where to find which shape, and the little cartridge all fit inside that. A shoe box can hold enough boxes for hundreds and hundreds of images, while you could put a few big dies in one, or a bunch (but not hundreds and hundreds) of the Cuttlebug dies or Sizzlets. You can use other dies on the Sizzix if you know how to do it.
There’s another machine I think about getting called a Spellbinder. It has these great dies called Nestabilities, and if I was starting today without anything I’d but that one because I use the Nestabilities much more often than any of the other dies I have. It works in a Sizzix, but you need to have an adapter pad, and a piece of card stock and I had to write on the card stock the right order to put them in the machine. Then you can flip it over and put this other little pad on it, and it embosses the edge of what ever you cut.
