How To Make Your Own Invitations
Party-givers have access to a tremendous selection of printable party invitations in these modern times. No matter the occasion, there are free invitation graphics you can download and print on your own printer. As might be expected, there are many general invitation types, such as free party invitations. But there are also many free printable invitations for very specific party types. For instance, valentine party invitations, July 4th invitations and many others.
Do-it-yourself invites are usually fairly easy to prepare if you have access to a word processing program, like MS Word, Open Office or AbiWord; or a publishing program, such as PagePlus or Microsoft Publisher. You just pop the invitation image into the software, make it the size you want and print it out. But as simple as that is, there are some subtleties it pays to be aware of when making the invitations. The following tips will help you grasp those subtleties and allow you to get the most value out of invitation art:
- If you’re using word processing software program, you can use tables or text boxes to get more than one invitation image on a page. This will save card stock and your time. (A table is the easier method of the two. If you don’t know how to use tables or text boxes, read the help menu of your word processing software.) Make sure to match up one or more edge of the invitation art to the other, so you can eliminate one cut.
- When cutting the invitations, you’ll get the best results if you use a paper cutter. If you don’t happen to have one lying around the house, you can pay someone to cut them at a print shop, office supply store or copy center. If there aren’t any stores around you with a paper cutter, the next best method is to use an ruler, X-acto knife and some kind of board that hopefully will protect your tabletop from cuts. And if nothing else, you can utilize scissors. If you do, make sure to draw faint pencil lines first, so you’ll see where you should cut. If you don’t think you’ll be able to cut straight, use patterned scissors that will hide the defects in the cutting.
- Once your invitations are cut, you might want to take the extra step of embellishing them. There is a wide array of three-dimensional embellishments available at craft stores. These include stamped out paper embellishments, silk flowers, rhinestones and many other types of additions. Three-dimensional paint or glitter glue can also be used to enhance the design. Be careful with this, however, because this is one area that less is truly more. You might try using the glue or paint on only the highlights, not the main areas of the design. And it’s advisable to have extra invitations on-hand, so you can experiment a little until you get the look you want.
