installing face nailed hardwood flooring?
i just got a screaming deal on some non t and g red oak i have never done a face nailed floor before. all i know is to stager the ends,
you have to use a 15 to 18 gauge brad,
two brads every 7″
most important keep it straight.
i thinking about putting dabs of liquid nails every so often on the back of the boards to help prevent squeaks
also is there a clear epoxy to fill in small holes in the wood?
what kind of gaps at the wall should i leave it never snows and the hottest it gets is about 105f once or twice a year and very low humidity
This type of installation can lead to problems down the road if your not careful.The nails that close together is fine and to get and keep the boards running straight is critical as you suspect.
Now is the tricky part. You need to lay a felt or rosin paper between the wood flooring and the sub floor. So this stops you from doing dabs of glue, but your idea is good. But its best to used a full spread glue if you want to help keep the floor from squeaks. Dabs of glue will cause small gaps and eventual squeaks.
You d be better off doing a whole line or a curvy line on each board to get more coverage and no paper.
Or purchase a regular wood glue that you can trowel out as you top nail.
If you use an epoxy , the epoxy will neither take a stain or a urethane and show later.
Use the standard 1/4″ gab as normal, cover with the base or a shoe molding.
