How do you prepare fabric for machine applique?
Several years ago I made an appliqued wall hanging and now I can’t remember what I did. I remember making a plastic template but then I ironed something to the fabric to make it stiff while I cut it out and machine stitched it. Any ideas?
There are several stabilizers that work for machine applique. The most common is a fusible web (Wonder Under, Steam A Seam, Heat N Bond, just to name a few), there are various strengths of the adhesive. These are usually used to “glue” the applique to the base fabric, keeping the applique in place and stabilized while you machine stitch around it.
—Ask the clerks at your fabric store which weight is right for your particular project and fabric.
There are temporary stabilizers that machine embroiderers use that are self-adhesive on one side, simply stitch through and tear it off when done. You could also use stitch-n-tear stabilizer and a temporary spray adhesive to mount your fabrics on and stitch through (I use Sullivan’s Spray Adhesive, pink can, doesn’t gum up the machine needle).
If you get a thicker (heavier) water soluble stabilizer, you can spray the stabilizer to make it tacky and stick your fabric to it. Then, when you’re done stitching, put the piece under cool running water and the stabilizer rinses away. I use one called Badgemaster that is thick and it’s great for all sorts of uses (especially thread painting!).
Good Luck.
