can you put a walking foot on any sewing machine?
Do only certain types of sewing machines accept a walking foot or do the universal ones fit as long as you get it for the right shank type?
I have an old Kenmore 158.840 sewing machine and am having a hard time finding a walking foot that says specifically this machine’s model #. Does anybody know which walking foot will fit this machine?

You may be able to use a generic, no name brand like the one sold at JoAnn or Hancock fabrics.
Go by the shank measurements. There is a Shank Chart, however Kenmore and Singer are two brands that have thousands of models and I doubt if all are listed – http://www.clotilde.com/pages/which_foot.html
You had another question about the machine jamming on the first stitch that is now closed for voting.
I want to add that I have found this can also happen when using the foot for zig-zag stitching (wide opening for the needle). The fabric has to be under the presser foot at the back of the opening for the needle or the fabric will not feed and the first stitch jams the fabric down into the opening for the bobbin thread.
