black and white are co-dominant genes and when mixed produce a third phenotype which is gray.
black is AA phenotype, white is BB phenotype, and gray is AB.
the rooster is Gray meaning it has the AB phenotype as does its mate.

You will notice half the chickens are gray, a quarter are black, and a quarter are white. Very similar to the numbers that were really produced.
