I want to make a thick, warm and soft blanket for my daughter. I’m knitting.?
I chose a DK, Light Weight yarn (soft and shiney looking yarn) Weight 3. It says on the label to use a 4mm knitting needle but I’m using a 6.5 mm knitting needle (10 1/2 US). The pattern I have begun to work on calls for worsted yarn and 6.5 mm knitting needle. Just wondering if I’m using the right yarn and if it will come out too thick? Thank you!!
Most likely it will come out more open and lacy as well as somewhat more narrow. Worsted yarn is usually weight 4, so the yarn you are using is thinner by at least a little. The pattern should have a gauge listed on it. Measure your gauge and you will probably see that you use more stitches per inch than what is listed on the pattern. So some simple math here for you, lets say the pattern says the gauge is 5 stitches to the inch and you cast on 40 stitches – this means your piece will measure about 8 inches across. Using the DK you might notice that your gauge is 6 stitches to the inch, since you have the same number of stitches (40) and 40/6=6.67 inches the piece will be narrower by a little more than an inch. The more stitches that you start with the narrower piece will be than what is expected.
