Making a scabbard, need help with ordering leather?
Alright, so I know the how-to’s of actually making a scabbard, but I’m unsure about what leather to order. As in, how long would a piece of tooling side be? To be more specific, I’m looking at Royal Meadow Tooling sides from Tandy Leather Factory ( http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home/department/Leather/9003-305.aspx?feature=Product_5 ) Secondly, what weight should I get? It’s a fairly heavy sword. Thinking 4-5 ounces? And the first size offered is 24 sq feet. Is that enough for a sword?
The average side will be about 7 feet long in the neck to butt area and 5 – 5 1/2 feet in the belly area. Usually around 3 1/2 feet backbone to belly so, yes a side will be enough. An ounce is equal to 1/64th of an inch so 4-5 ounce is 1/16th to 5/46ths thick. For a large heavy sword I would use 8-9 oz ( 8 oz = 1/8″ thick ) for an unlined scabbard or two layers of the 4-5. You should also look at Tandy’s “bag stiffener” #9072-00 this is the same material used to form the toe boxes and heel counters in shoes and boots and comes about 50 inches long. If you want to make a scabbard firmer without adding bulky leather this can be cemented in between the cover and the lining.
