Two American Made Combat Optics
By the standard of the Western World, the US Army was late to adopt a magnifying optic on its infantry rifles and carbines. Alongside the latest version of the M68 CCO, the Aimpoint CompM4S, soldiers of the US Army are now issued a Trijicon ACOG. The M150RCO is the US Army version of the USMC’s AN/PVQ-31B (civilian designation TA31RCO-M4CP). Both sights can be traced back to the 4X32 Trijicon TA31F. Unlike the USMC which issues two versions optimized for the M16A4 and M4 respectively, the US Army issues the M150 for the M4, M16A2, M16A4 and M249 (both barrel lenghts) and issues instructions as to how the ballistics will vary. The sight has a red chevron aiming mark dual illuminated (as are the 100 – 300 meter stadia) by fiber-optics and a tritium phosphor lamp. The stadia reticle is calibrated to 800 meters. You can range by placing the horizontal stadia which subtend the width of a silhouette target on the target or use the 0.5 and 1.0 mil spaced vertical stadia for calculation. The TA51 twin thumbscrew flat-top mount can be detached allowing the sight to fit the carry handle of an M16A2. This sight is delivered to the Army with flip-up lens covers, an AGF1-ARD combined laser filter and anti reflection device.
In contrast the Leupold Prismatic Rifle Scope uses a conventional telescopic lens system to provide 1X magnification in a 30mm tube configuration. This scope combines the benefits of a riflescope and red dot in a small, tough package. Rapid aming and precision are provided by a circle and cross reticle. A detachable illumination unit is powered by a button type battery. Illumination unit failure does not affect reticle visibility. The scope comes with a Picatinny/Weaver-style thumbscrew operated mount with three spacers to enable use on various weapons with various co-witness options. As an alternative it is possible to mount the scope with 30 mm rings. Other choices are the non-adjustable A.R.M.S. #22 throw-lever mount or the adjustable Accucam for Leupold Prismatic Scope
